Week 6 : Poster Design

The seven principles of poster design :
  1. Emphasis - What sticks out and draw the attention
  2. Balance and Alignment - The space and placement of elements to feel organized
  3. Contrast - The space and difference in the elements, to make a design pop
  4. Repetition - It's okay to repeat some things as it can unifies and strengthen the design
  5. Proportion - The visual size and weights of each element and how they relate to each other
  6. Movement - Controlling the elements to creates the story or narrative of your work
  7. White Space - The empty page around the element to give the composition a room to breathe

Practical

First I downloaded the file from both of the instructions (tutorial).

I then proceed to do the first exercise which is recoloring using brush tool.

I first colored the skin using the brush tool with the skin color of my choosing and cleaned it up using the eraser tool.

I then used blending mode and set it to overlay then adjusted the opacity.

I continued coloring the same way with the hair , eyes and clothes.

Fig. 3.3. Recolored old man (28/10/24)

I feel like it needs a little more depth so I added a second layer of color to the skin and hair and used the multiply mode to create shadow. The hair part was also smudged using the smudge tool and then blurred to make it more natural looking.

I also added the background by selecting everything except the old man and then coloring it using a brush and using the overlay blending mode before adjusting the opacity .

Continuing to the second exercise where we were given a lady and 2 reference to based the color of the skin and hair from

Fig. 3.8. Black and white picture (31/10/24)

I first used the rectangle marquee tool to select the face and move it to the black and white picture where I then eye dropped the light, medium and dark color of her skin to the top edge corner.

I also did the same thing with the hair.

I then proceed to use the quick selection tool to select the hair and cleaned it up using the refine brush after clicking select and mask.

Fig. 3.10. Hair selected (31/10/24)

That selected part is then made into a mask and then I proceed to use the medium tone of the hair to make a solid color layer.

then I moved the mask to the solid color layer and using the blending mode soft light before lowering the opacity to make it look more natural.

I repeated the process with the skin, the lips, teeth, eyes and earrings using either the soft light or overlay blending mode with minimal opacity adjustment.

For the final touch, I selected the background and mask it on a solid color.

Fig. 3.13. Final Recolored Exercise 2 (31/10/24)

For the extra task , we needed to choose one person from the file to color. I choose this nice looking lady.

Fig. 3.14. Black and white picture (01/11/24)

The process is more or less similar to exercise 2, I first selected the jewelry and a bit of the eye on the lady.

Fig. 3.15. Selected jewelry and side of the eye (01/11/24)

I colored them white and used the overlay blending mode before lowering the opacity a little.

Fig. 3.16. Colored jewelry and side of the eye (01/11/24)

I continued doing the same for the rest of the picture with just a little difference of the kind of blending mode used  (between multiply, overlay and soft light) and the adjusted opacity.

Reflection

This week task is tiring to make. I admit that it's fun to do but it's so time consuming as I wanted it to look good and not messy. The first exercise is the most time consuming as it is colored manually while the second exercise took a bit of time as I was experimenting with the cleaned up brush. The extra task though was done quite quickly as I became more used to recoloring black and white after the two given exercises. The results is somewhat okay and just a little satisfying.
