TYPO_5

Some letterform may look unsymmetrical due to one stroke being thinner than the other, even those that look symmetrical if looked closely may actually be unsymmetrical.

X-Height is usually used to describe the size of the lowercase letterform however curved strokes such as an 's' must rise above the median line or sink below the baseline to appear the same size.

Counter forms are important as it effects the readability of a word or the letterform itself.

Before designing a typeface, it is best to analyze an existing typeface first to understand the letters better.

TASK 2 - TYPOGRAPHIC EXPLORATION & COMMUNICATION

TASK SUMMARY
"Choose 1 out of the 3 text given and create a headline expression either in Illustrator or Indesign before arranging a text formatting layout in Indesign. "

1. TITLE

Out of the 3 text given, I chose the second one with the title "Unite To Visualize a Better World" and decided to highlight the word Unite. I made 3 simple titles design in Adobe Illustrator highlighting that word.

I then proceed to copy and paste that title on Indesign and  inputted the text on to one of the title's spread and started formatting it.

I continued doing the same with the rest of the titles with the only major difference of text placement.

I decided to use the second design.

I asked for Mr.Vinod's feedback and he adjusted my title a little by making it a little more center.

He proceeded to make one title inspired by the font that I used for the word unite. However I decided to stick with my own design as it didn't really felt right to use it.

During the feedback, Mr.Vinod reminded us to check the text again as someone had messed up the text arrangement in which I found that the body and lead-in text was wrong so I had to format it again.

I gave the spread a border and then printed the end design on an A3 paper. The printed design was looked over by Mr.Vinod which there was one line sticking out which could be fixed easily.

However, he also pointed out the title which is pixelated and was a little confusing to fix.

At first thought that it was because the title canvas size was smaller (150x150 mm) than the layout spread (200x200 mm) and I needed to upsize the title in the layout manually hence the pixels.

But, after I fixed it, it still didn't change.

I then thought that it was because I used copy and paste to move the title. So I exported the title as JPG but it covered the guide lines which make it a little confusing to align.

I then tried to export it as PNG which worked but it was still pixelated.

In the end I decided to just make it in Indesign. First I copy and pasted the same circle size from Illustrator on to Indesign and typed in the word as well as change the font and size to be the same as the original before moving it to the desired location.

That solution worked and to make sure I quickly printed it on an A3 paper with the pdf file ,which looks clearer, that prove it finally worked.

I asked Mr.Vinod's feedback to make sure everything is fine which he then provided some tips to make the reading flow better, which is to align everything at the bottom text.

However, for the lead-in text, I was a bit confused on to align the line itself or the text instead. But I decided that making the line align looks much better than aligning it with the text.

I also found that the lead in text was the wrong font so I quickly changed it to the same font used on the body text.

Feedbacks

Week 6
Specific Feedback : Everything looks fine but the title can be fixed a little by centering the second part to the first part of the title. However when printed the title is too pixelated and there was a word sticking out on one of the paragraph, those need to be fixed before submission
General Feedback : There's nothing wrong with the work but maybe adjust the title.

Week 7
Spesific Feedback : Task 2 is good but maybe make the text align on the bottom instead, think about which to align, the text or the line, to the body.
General Feedback : Task 2 is all done, complete the blog by 17th of November.

Reflections

Experience :
Compared to the previous task, this one is much more easier to do. I think it's because it's an application of all the things that we have studied previously. It's quite enjoyable to make however I sometimes felt unsatisfied with the result even though the feedback is mostly alright. Overall though it's quite a pleasant experience even though it's not really a topic that I personally really like.

Observation :
I didn't really observed that much for this task as I was a bit too focused on my own work. But I did saw some of my classmate work that was given feedback by the lecturer, I saw how they made their titles and I must say that it was eye-opening as I never thought of using or arranging the titles like that. I really thought that there wasn't really that many ways to arrange the title but seeing my classmate works definitely proved me wrong.

Findings :
I have found that my mind is still quite closed off and rather than thinking outside of the box with the titles, I found myself stuck to the same idea over and over again, thinking that it's the only way, but through observation was proven wrong. I want to try making design such as the one that I saw my classmates made, something that is so simple yet I wasn't able to thought of because of my closed off mind.

Further Reading

I wanted to read something that correlates with the task so I choose the book "The Vignelli Canon" that I was able to access online from Mr.Vinod class files in teams.

Fig.19 The Vignelli Canon by Massimo Vignelli (17/11/23)

I was wondering who Massimo Vignelli was, so I searched him up. Turns out he was actually a popular Italian designer that was said to be one of the most important figure in the history of design, especially in Graphic Design.

Week 5

Fig.20 Grids, Margins, Columns and Modules (17/11/23)

It explains the organization of an information by using grids. Usually the smaller the grid the least helpful it is while the coarser the grid the more restricting it is hence it's important to know which grid to use depending on the work.

Week 6

Fig.21 Type Size Relationship (17/11/23)

It explains what type size is best to use during typesetting , every situation may need different ratio but there are some basic rules in relation to the width of the column.
